Today’s Fisher’s Favourite is Ricky Lightfoot.
Fell runner, full-time firefighter, husband to Sophie, and father to Isobelle, Ricky took up fell running at age 16, after Brian Taylor, a keen fell runner, and manager of Ricky’s school sports centre, was looking for recruits for a local fell race, and Ricky decided he would give it a go.
Despite the typical Cumbrian wind and rain, Ricky loved it, and as they say, the rest is history. Ricky soon started competing within Cumbria, then county level, and before long Ricky was competing on the international circuit.
Ricky joined the Trail Team at Salomon at the end of 2008, and has been a sponsored athlete with them ever since. With the Salomon Team Ricky has competed all over the world - The Olympus Marathon in Greece, The USA, China, and in 2013 won the IAU World Trail Championships in Wales!
Ricky also competed in the 2005 World Masters Championships which were held here in Keswick. Ricky won the Open over 18’s event, and Ricky competed as part of a team that won the George Fisher Cumbrian Challenge Team event, along with Jackie Winn, and Brian Taylor.
“I first visited GF's in 2005 after the World Masters Open Race which was held in Keswick.
We (my corporate team) won the team event and were presented with glass tankards depicting the event and GF by Andy Airey. I've still got and use the tankard at work.”
