Today’s Fisher’s Favourite is John Manning.
Yorkshire-man, long distance walker, and journalist, John reckons he has the best job in the world: walking, and writing about walking.
He’s enjoyed both since his childhood, when he spent his spare time drawing and writing for home-spun magazines as well as school and church publications, and hiking in the Yorkshire Dales and in the Lake District.
After an award winning 7 years with newspapers in the Halifax and Todmorden area, John was appointed Deputy Editor of TGO Magazine in 1994, where he stayed for 13 years, before moving to the Yorkshire Dales to work as a freelance journalist. John is currently the Editor for Cumbria, and Lakeland Walker magazines.
John’s chosen line of work has enabled him to walk and write about places across the globe, from North America – where, in 2004, he thru’ hiked the 2700-mile Pacific Crest Trail – and amongst other destinations has been to India, Nepal, New Zealand, Peru, Finland, Slovenia, and more!
“When in my early teens, I’d marvel at the postcards displayed in George Fisher’s window, received from around the globe and often vaguely addressed – but they’d all arrived, such was the store’s renown. It's reassuring to know the store – with its accumulated expertise – is still there, four decades later, and I still call in when exploring the Northern and North Western Fells.”
We'd love to hear your stories too!
