We continue our 60th anniversary celebrations with today’s Fisher’s Favourite - Katy Whittaker.
Based in North Wales, Katy Whittaker is one of the UK’s top female climbers. She has excelled in a number of different climbing disciplines, from indoor competitions, to bold grit routes and hard sport routes. In 2007, her first year as a senior competitor, she won the British Bouldering Championship.
As part of her role as an Athlete Ambassador with Arc’teryx, Katy has been involved with the Arc’teryx Lakeland Revival, encouraging climbers of all abilities to get back outside and ‘revive’ classic climbing routes.
She was born in Burnley, but grew up in Edale in the Peak District. Her introduction to the outdoor life came early with an abundance of family holidays focussed upon walking, scrambling and climbing.
“The Lakes holds a lot of special memories for me as I spent quite a bit of time up here with my family, my Mum, Dad and brother when we were younger. It was before we properly got into climbing and my parents loved walking on the fells but wanted to keep it interesting for Pete (my brother) and I so we wouldn’t complain! They always tied the walks in with scrambles, camping, swims and/or ghyll scrambling. One of the most memorable ones was close to Keswick and went up the side of a waterfall, Pete and I were tied together so if one of us slipped and swung into the waterfall we would take the other with us. We were really nervous and I am pretty sure there were tears but they were all forgotten when we got to the top!”
We'd love to hear your stories too!
